Fashion Focus Chicago 2009: Horacio Nieto Spring/Summer 2010 Collections

Chicago designer Horacio Nieto recently presented his Spring/Summer 2010 womenswear and menswear collections during Fashion Focus Chicago 2009.

Nieto, a Texas native and winner of AOL’s 2008 Latino Fashionista online fashion competition, debuted his menswear collection, Arlo, featured a mix of modern and traditional American style. The collection included classic, casual dress shirts and trench coats in vibrant colors and neutral blazers, jackets and khaki pants and short.

His women’s line paralleled Arlo with the use of playful colors and neutrals; but was more risqué with sexy yet sophisticated short dresses suitable for work and play. Nieto stated his inspiration for the collection was an Amazon tribe with his use of textures, colors and modern elements.

A rarity in the fashion world to cater to both sexes, Nieto’s effortless executed showcase of both collections proves his talent and longevity in the industry.

Push Play – Red Hot and Burnin' it Up!

Push Play – Red Hot and Burnin' it Up!
Subterranean - Chicago, IL, USA - October 13, 2009
by Anita Maree Lande

You will be drawn in by the good looks of this four piece band from Long Island, NY. But then you will be spun in by the fun, pop-rocking songs that will leave you craving for more. The band is currently on tour promoting their new CD release called Found on their Midnight Romeo Tour. When the band took stage, the mostly all female crowd of fans were ready to rock. CJ Baran - the model-looking lead singer and guitarist took control and led off the night with their perfect pop-rocker Watch It Burn which led into Heart Attack and the whoa-whoa sing-along Away,Away. Other catchy tunes performed were Barely Legal and Start Again. The band seemed thrilled to be back in Chicago and they all shared lead vocals when they did a knock-out Push Play version of the Beastie Boys hit - Fight For Your Right. They also performed Covergirl - a high energy song about finding that perfect face in a magazine and their big smash of the night was their own Midnight Romeo. The band selected one lucky girl from the audience, led her on stage, and she was their Midnight Juliet as they sang their song to her.

This band has the makings of being the next big thing. Definitively Push Play to take a listen to this band!

Summer's Fall Fashion Show Debuts the Hottest Trends to Transition

Summer's Fall Fashion Show Debuts the Hottest Trends to Transition
63rd Street Beach House - Chicago, IL, USA - September 12, 2009
by Sommer Thorton, photos by Percy Ollie, Jr.

There couldn't have been a more perfect venue for last weeks Summer's Fall Fashion Show. The roof of the 63rd Street Beach house in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood provided a natural runway and backdrop to display the hottest designs for Summer and Fall by 828, Personal Privilege, and (emee). As the sun glistened against the shores of Lake Michigan the models ripped the runway to soul and techno remixes. It was like watching a glamorous show in a decadent castle.

Though unique, the three local lines had one common thread-They addressed the need for transitional pieces that take can be worn late Summer to Fall. Especially in Chicago, the weather can change from summer solstice to blistery fall in an hour. So early September to late October when the sandals and spaghetti straps are put away and ladies hold off donning boots, they're left with few options.

Jay-Z Performance at the House of Blues- "Once in a Lifetime"

Jay-Z Performance at the House of Blues- "Once in a Lifetime"
House of Blues - September 8, 2009 - Chicago, IL, USA
by Sommer Thornton, photo by Raymond Boyd

Jay-Z's swag was on a million last night. Wearing all black with an icy black charm, Jigga had a stance of a man ten feet tall...modest billionaire at the least. His free concert, sponsored by Samsung and AT&T, was part of the Summer Krush concert series, an exclusive tour that previously featured acts like Mariah Carey, Nelly, and Good Charlotte. The fact that only a few hundred of Jay-Z's loyal fans could attend made the one-hour performance a truly unique experience.

Jay-Z and his comrade, Memphis Bleek, Rocafeller Records veteran artist, ripped the stage. Not only did fans get to sample new songs from Jay-Z's new album "Blueprint III", released that morning, but they saw him perform some of the hottest cuts from his last 3 albums. Songs like "Takeover" and "Allure" had little air play. Still fans sang along so fervently that Jigga stopped the performance and jokingly asked the audience to help him remember the lyrics to a new song, "Venus vs. Mars."

Madeleine Albright, Discussion & Signing for “Read My Pins: Stories from a Diplomat's Jewel Box, Borders Books on State Street Chicago

Madeleine Albright, Discussion & Signing for “Read My Pins: Stories from a Diplomat's Jewel Box" at Borders Books on State Street, Chicago, IL, USA, October 7, 2009

The story and celebration of how one woman’s jewelry collection was used to make diplomatic history. A unique celebration of the pin or brooch as a means of personal and diplomatic expression, seen through the extraordinary life and career of one of the world’s most admired women. Read My Pins features a gallery of fascinating photographs, showing both the Albright collection and Secretary Albright wearing the pins at history-making events; the images of more than 200 pins, some elegant, many playful, are included. To be published in conjunction with an exhibit at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) in New York .

Madeleine Albright was the first female Secretary of State of the United States and, at that time, the highest-ranking woman in U.S. history. Like most women, she had occasionally worn pins before entering public service, but it was when she took office as America ’s Ambassador to the United Nations, and then as Secretary of State, that she came to understand how powerful a symbol a simple piece of jewelry could be. When she wore a snake pin after Saddam Husssein’s press called her a serpent, and then a pin of a doomed bird after Cuban-American pilots were shot down in international waters, the world’s press took notice, showing that while the pin is an expression of femininity and fashion, it can also be a badge of individuality, a vibrant and witty vehicle for telling a story, and can be a diplomatic tool for delivering messages to world leaders, politicians, the public, and beyond.

Chicago Eliminated in Round One of the 2016 Olympics

Our home town, the City of Chicago, was eliminated on the first round of voting by the International Olympic Committee. Who threw the wrench in that vote? Myself and the whole City of Chicago was shocked when the announcement was made at Daley Plaza. The faces among the attendees were shock with some tears.

We wish you well Rio de Janei on winning the Olympic 2016 Bid
